Alice and Aubrey McKissick

On any given day, you will see the McKissicks out and about at Springdale at Lucy Corr Village engaged in a variety of activities. As a couple, Alice and Aubrey regularly volunteer to help with community projects, compete in Wii bowling tournaments, take classes, and join other residents for cards and “brain aerobics.”

“My husband and I like staying busy and involved – and there’s always something to do here,” Alice says. The McKissicks particularly enjoy the day trips offered by the community and look forward to the live singers and musicians who regularly entertain on campus. “We just take it all in and enjoy it,” she adds.

This outgoing couple of 60 years moved to Springdale from Blackstone, Virginia and traded the responsibilities of maintaining a large home with acreage for the carefree-lifestyle of the Brightwater apartments. While they were first drawn to Springdale’s welcoming environment and propinquity to family members, availability of on-site care was pivotal to their relocation decision.

“We wanted a place where quality care would always be readily accessible and Springdale offered exactly what we wanted,” Alice shares. “Here you can just pull the emergency chord in your apartment and help comes right away. It’s so reassuring.”

The move to Springdale has suited the McKissicks well. They enjoy their comfortable apartment, eating delicious meals in the dining room with other residents, and staying actively engaged. Alice and Aubrey say they love being around the people in the community. They quickly note that the Springdale staff treats them like royalty and the other residents treat them like close family.

For seniors considering retirement community living, they recommend “moving while you are still mobile and can enjoy everything the community offers.”
