FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Piecing Together the Fabric of Community

Chesterfield, Virginia, September 24, 2010 - A group of seven ladies from Springdale at Lucy Corr Village have been working diligently painting fabric quilt squares. The blocks will be fashioned into a quilt, which will be raffled off to benefit the Lucy Corr Foundation. The quilt will go on display on October 9th at the Lucy Corr Village Hometown Community Fair, which is one of many events in a series of festivities celebrating their 40th year Anniversary.

Maggie Twilley, Springdale resident, has been spearheading the effort to get each of the quilt squares painted, a total of 22. Mrs. Twilley has taught fabric painting in the past and has won several awards for her work. She proposed her idea of creating a quilt to raise funds for the foundation to Gertrude Green, Director of Hospitality at Lucy Corr Village and chair person for the community fair’s planning committee. Ms. Green thought it was a great idea and wonderful addition to the event.

Mrs. Twilley and six other ladies, Judy Bass, Ruth Glick, Alice McKissick, Jane Spain, Rosanna Strauss, and Mary Vaden, all residents of Springdale, have worked for many days with steady hands and giving hearts to meticulously craft each quilt square. These ladies have all come to know each other and share their talents and interests over the past year when they became residents of Springdale at Lucy Corr. It is through their love for each other and the community that they first came together for this effort. Once they were finished with the beautifully crafted squares, Mrs. Twilley engaged Ann Erbes, a talented quilter, and friend from the Shepherd’s Center, to assist in assembling the individual pieces and creating the full quilt. Mrs. Erbes has been locally awarded for her quilting skills and this piece will surely be of showcase quality. The Shepherd’s Center of Chesterfield is comprised of “seniors volunteering to improve the quality of life for other seniors,” and their administrative offices are located on the Lucy Corr Village campus.

Mrs. Erbes is still skillfully transforming the individual squares into a beautiful quilt and once it is fully assembled, it will represent a labor of love, collaboration and partnership between friends and community. Each lady who participated in its making will have the honor of signing their creation before it goes on display.

Over 40 years ago, Miss Lucy Corr, Director of Social Services, had a vision to create a place where older adults in Chesterfield County and the surrounding areas could be cared for when their needs could no longer be met at home. When it opened its doors in 1970 as Chesterfield County Nursing Home, now Lucy Corr Village, it became part of the fabric which has resulted in Chesterfield County becoming a “first choice community.” Since then The Village has regularly expanded its campus to more services, more residents and also to the community at large through partnerships such as with The Shepherd’s Center. Just over a year ago Lucy Corr Village, governed by the Health Center Commission for the County of Chesterfield grew once again by adding Springdale to its campus and becoming a full service, continuing care retirement community with independent living, residential cottage and apartment homes.

In celebrating 40 years of serving seniors and their families Lucy Corr Village invites you to its Hometown Community Fair, Saturday, October 9, 2010, 8am-3:30 pm. It will be a fun filled day for all ages. There will be a community yard sale, car show, stage entertainment, unique vendors and craftsman, parade, bands, steppers, twirlers, kids’ carnival, bouncing moonwalk, bake sale, food, games and much more! Chesterfield County Fire Department will be on campus providing live evacuation training for children and fire extinguisher training to all who are interested. The County Crime Prevention Unit will be giving you tips on how to stay safe. Also partnering on this event is CVS Pharmacy, who will be conducting a Flu Shot Clinic for those 18 or older, and providing free Medication Consultations, Diabetes Education and Blood Pressure Readings.

There’s no admission fee and all are welcome. Any Lucy Corr proceeds will go to their Foundation to purchase high tech, electrical hospital beds for the health care center residents.
